There are many different approaches to stress management in which music plays an integral part. These
approaches can be based on biological and psychological manifestations of stress. In research into these
processes, stress is measured in terms of changes in certain bodily characteristics such as finger
temperature, heart rate and blood pressure; changes that influence immune and neuro-endocrine
responses. Historically music has long been used for relaxation and a number of studies explore how
different music may be used to manage stress. Several of these studies reveal that ‘Classical’ music has
a pronounced influence over stress, surprisingly, more than popular ‘New Age’ recreational music. Many
students use music to relieve stress and it is useful for educators to consider this additional application
of music in their teaching. This paper will present an overview of current research in the employment
of music in stress management.
