Clearly, further research is needed
to explore how community and individual
characteristics can explain variation in the responses
to alternative institutions. Obviously,
this requires visiting many more communities
than we were able to. Yet, a clearer understanding
of the relationships between community and
individual characteristics and behavior in common
pool experiments would provide valuable
information about exploiting possible complementarities
between community-based initiatives
and external regulations and thus help in
the design of better policies to effectively and
efficiently reduce overexploitation of common
property resources in the developing world.
