The prognosis of a woman experiencing AFE has improved significantly with early
diagnosis and prompt and aggressive treatment by a multidisciplinary team.145 Although
case fatality rates for AFE have fallen, there is still significant morbidity among survivors.
In the Clark et al’s national registry,19 among the survivors, persisting neurological
impairment was reported in 61% of women and 50% of infants. In the United Kingdom
registry,35 of the 31 women who survived, 6% had persisting neurological impairment
whereas of the 33 infants who survived, 18% developed hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
and 6% developed cerebral palsy.
