1. Hammer test
I performed demonstration of the hammer test process against relevant parties in depots physically.
1) If rust growth like photo is found and should be carried out the hammer test, checker/inspector must be considered next things.
2) Should be used by proper hammer tool like photo, which is nominated from IICL.
3) Hit 2-3 times lightly, if surface rust is removed and confirmed no hole, the panel condition is no necessary repair.
4) We can judge whether the rust point is really repair required or not by hit sound.
5) If test hitting sound is the similar sound compared with non rust point, the panel with rust point is still good condition.
6) But if you feel the hitting sound is different, you should try to hit the point by the hammer.
7) Actually real rust/corrosion point will be made holes easily without strong hammering.
8) Rust/corrosion point should not be hit too hard. If hit too hard, it will show sharp dent mark on the panel. Below is the bad sample. As it was hit improperly too hard, hole shows sharp torn panel.
9) Depending on the condition of rust/corrosion, you might not need a hammer test. For Example on below, left photo is no necessary but right is needed, I believe your checker / inspector already know because they have experience and are professional. No need ( Acceptable ) Need (Check)
10) Even if it is the above” No need”, you try to hit 1 or 2 time and check hitting sound.
11) Please remember these, you can get save time and labor for container inspection.
Finally all parties understood the hammer test process and they promised to perform in accordance with our required inspection method.
** They also promised if corroded hole was made by improper hammering, the repair charge takes under depot/ vendor account. I suggested KLV OPS to prepare some agreement in writing with the depots.
