MANOVA allows for the statistical analysis of the effect of
explanatory variables on several dependent variables at once while
controlling for the excessive type I error associated with running
several ANOVA (Lawless & Heymann, 2010). With this in mind,
MANOVA was used to determine the impact of the main effects
of panelist, replicate, flavor(s) added, tannin, and ethanol as well
as the tannin ⁄ ethanol interaction on the TI parameters. MANOVA
was also utilized to determine whether PROP taster status or saliva
flow rate of the panelists affected the resulting TI parameters.
Significance in the MANOVA (p < 0.05) was followed by means separation
using Tukey’s honestly significant difference test.
