Until recently, biodiversity was a subject of purely academic discussions in narrow scientific circles.

But the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity by more than 190 countries at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 put this subject at the top of international environmental agenda and brought a sense of urgency to the issue of biological conservation.
Indeed, the value of biodiversity must never be underestimated.
