Bercault et al. found that an episode of transport from
the ICU to another place in the hospital increases the risk
of development of VAP.40 It is thought that the patient’s
positioning in supine position, and the frequent handling
of the ventilator tubing during the transfers, may facilitate the aspiration of contaminated secretions.29 Nowadays,
when an intra-hospital transfer is needed the patient
should be in an inclined position and enteral nutrition
(EN) should be suspended 4h before the transfer.
