James Bond wasn’t sure whether ‘M’ was going soft or just becoming paranoid at any mention of a connection to SMERSCH. He was being sent to America to track down Mr Big, suspected of smuggling gold from the Caribbean. Pirate treasure, a beautiful girl, money to spend and, with old friend Felix Leiter for company, it all came together. Felix, with his love of jazz, was the ideal guide to the clubs of Harlem – right up to the last one with its undertones of Voodoo, Dr Samedi and threats of death.
Mr Big, a powerful man with contacts everywhere, took pride in being the best at what he did. His muse with psychic powers made sure no-one had the better of him. Why was she called Solitaire? Because she would rather be single and alone or because there could only be one man for her? It took a train journey, a kidnapping and a ride behind a boat before Bond worked that one out.
