On Sept. 1, 1990, the superintendent of the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary was so distraught about the environmental destruction and death of wildlife in the name of greed and corruption he pulled out a pistol and shot himself in the head.
“If any animal will be killed in Huai Kha Kaeng, it must be me,” Seub Nakhasathien famously wrote in his suicide note, which shocked the nation and brought attention to the issue, along with some effort to preserve the sanctuary.
To commemorate his suicide, the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation and Bangkok Art and Culture Centre will host Seub Nakhasathien Anniversary Remembrance Friday through Sunday.
Friday is also the anniversary of foundation member Sasin Chalermlarp's 388-kilometer walk to protest against the Mae Wong dam project, which will be presented via a documentary and discussion.
On the weekend, several talks and seminars will be held with Seub Nakhasathien Foundation along with associations and government officials whose work relate to natural resources such as the Royal Forest Department, Thai Sea Watch Association and Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.
The event is in Thai.
Live music will take the stage on Sunday afternoon.
