Hypersaline soil from a saltern at the Great Salt Lake
Minerals Corporation, Ogden, Utah served as a source of
halophilic bacteria. Isolation of a culture capable of degrading
phenol in a 15% salt solution began by placing approximately
6g of soil into 100ml of salt solution which
contained 100 mg/l of phenol, 6 mg/l P, 40 mg mg/l N and
10 mg/l yeast extract (Difco). After several days of mixing
on a shaker table (150rpm at 25°C), I-2ml of the slurry
