Interestingly, the home postal codes of fishers contributing trip
data for each region indicates the effort shift is primarily driven by
fishers travelling large distances from large coastal cities, primarily
suburbs of Sydney, rather than by local fishers entering the fishery.
This indicates that LBG fishers may have a disproportionately
high expenditure relative to other recreational fishers, and that the
LBGF may be comprised of a relatively small number of participants.
Average expenditure on consumable items during the study
period and fishing-related items in the 12 months previous to the
study period (AU$1735) was markedly higher than the expenditure
of AU$552 and AU$1407 by non-specialised recreational fishers
in Australia (Henry and Lyle, 2003) and the US (U.S. Department
of the Interior, 2006). This was primarily related to long distance
travel to a relatively small number of suitable fishing locations
subsequent accommodation costs, and purchase of high quality
game fishing tackle required to withstand long fight times with
large, fast-swimming game fish. Although expenditure does not
measure the economic value, since non-market values are not considered,
these results suggest that relatively small fishery may
make an important economic contribution to local economies and
the recreational fishing tackle industry.
