Treatment of poisoning due to oleander ingestion is dependent upon several key
factors that must be ascertained from the case history. These factors include:
identification of the plant involved as well as the delineation of the particular part of the plant ingested, time since ingestion, estimation of the quantity of plant material consumed, elapsed time between time of ingestion and appearance of
symptoms, and type of early symptoms (Geehr, 1984). Identification
of the plant involved would seem to be the first and foremost diagnosticaid.
This is true in cases where the patient arrives for treatment shortly after ingestion
and before onset of systemic symptoms other than vomiting.
