Scleroderma is an umbrella term for a group of
conditions, usually divided into systemic sclerosis
and localized scleroderma. LS, a localized form,
affects the skin, making it hard and shiny and
producing tight fibrous bands along the involved
area (Uziel et al., 1995). Frequently, the subcutaneous
tissue, muscle, and underlying bone are also
affected (Cassidy & Petty, 1995) and result in
contractures of joints, limitations of function, and
deformities in appearance. Lesions on the limbs
may cause atrophy of muscle, which affects bone
development and may lead to growth failure (van
den Hoogen & de Jong, 1995).
