1. Introduction
Recent research on forest ecosystems has emphasized the
importance of structural complexity for forest ecosystem
function and for the maintenance of biological diversity
(Franklin, 1993). Silviculture, as the art and science of
manipulating forest stands to achieve human objectives, has
developed different methods for stand regeneration based on
the desired type of structure in relation to species characteristics.
There are four main recognized regeneration harvest
methods for high forests: clearcut, seed tree and shelterwood
for an even-aged management system and selection cutting for
uneven-aged systems (Smith, 1986).
