The Storyline Approach was first developed by Steve Bell, Sallie Harkness and Fred Rendell at Jordanhill College of Education in Glasgow, Scotland in the 1960s as a method for the teaching of environmental studies. It came about as a result of recommendations that teachers adopt a more integrated approach to the curriculum which had, up until then, been divided into many small segments and proposed a more child centred approach to learning, with less reliance on the use of inappropriate textbooks.
