An import quota of 200Xwould have the same effect as the $1 tariff per unit of commodity X imported. Although foreign producers could increase their exports by reducing the price of commodity X when they face an import tariff, however, they cannot with an equivalent import quota. Thus, an import quota is a more stringent restriction. In any event, import tariffs, quotas, and other trade restrictions protect domestic producers from foreign competition, there by allowing them to produce more and charge higher prices. Import restrictions are invariably demanded by trade associations in order to protect their members from ‘unfair’ foreign competition. In reality, they are other a convenient and effective way to restrict competition and increase pieces.
