There are some connections between censorship and democracy failures in Thailand I believe, but it isn’t the main reason why democracy failed so badly. I don’t think that the censorship of lese majesty is that much against the success of democracy, for democracy isn’t just all about the rights to speak, but to improve the country in the right way. I believe that the main reason of democracy’s failure is the lack of education in terms all constitution, law, economic, or politics. So Thai’s democracy would never work to its best without people’s knowledge of economic for example, Greece had a good quality of free speech but due to the lack of people’s knowledge, they fell for populism policy which led to their downfall very easily. So I believe that a good democracy must consist of both free speech and people’s knowledge since democracy is a type of government where people have the participation in the management of the country, so it would be an expense if it falls into the hand of the uneducated one. This applies to Thailand as well, the elected government were the populist which completely destroyed reasonable the minimum wage and economic system of Thailand, nowadays the cost of living is increased, the country is indebted due to the policy that the elected government caused so I believe it’s the main reason the soldiers led the coup and comes to the failure in Thailand’s democracy.
In the type of democracy we used to have, it’s nothing like those of America or any developed country. The elected government had the right to pass any law due having more representative seats which is almost like we elected a party to become our dictator for 4 years. The first thing we need isn’t the right of free speech but the elimination of corrupted offices and we need to construct the balance of power. So I’d say that it’s pretty much the failures of “Thainess” democracy.
