To prevent performance bias, some of the studies did not inform nursing staff that a study was being performed thus reducing the Hawthorne effect. Seven of the studies had large study groups, which assisted with internal validity. Nine of the twenty-six studies were conducted in more then 1 hospital setting, improving the generalizability.
