Although the economic output from marine transportation
industry is larger than that of waterfront tourism, each unit of
final demand for waterfront tourism generates greater economic
impact on the regional economy than marine transportation does
by pulling more production activities across sectors. In terms of
unit environmental effects, waterfront tourism generally performs
better than marine transportation does. Specifically, for each unit
of economic output, fewer resources are consumed and fewer
emissions are generated by the activities associated with waterfront
tourism than those associated with marine transportation.
Therefore, given selected environmental indicators, the development
of waterfront tourism expects to impose less environmental burden on the regional ecosystem for the same level of economic
output.
