Mohandas Gandhi was one of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century. Many people call Gandhi the father of India because of his leadership in India's fight for independence from British rule.
Gandhi believed in resisting injustice in a peaceful, nonviolent way. "This is called passive resistance." Few leaders have done more for peace than Gandhi. Gandhi influenced the thinking of many other leaders around the world.
For example, the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., was inspired by Gandhi's writings. Nelson Mandela, black nationalist leader and first black president of South Africa; Lech Walesa, leader of the Polish labor Union Solidarity and former president of Poland; and Cesar Chavez, Mexican-American labor leader, were all influenced by Gandhi's beliefs.
Several Nobel Peace Prize winners such as the Dalai Lama of Tibet and Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar have stated their debt to him. Gandhi continues to be an inspiration to people who struggle for peace, justice, and nonviolence around the globe.
