The salty snacks analysed in this study contained high levels of
SFAs and TFAs. This consumption pattern can significantly increase
the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is the major cause of
death worldwide and was attributed to 30% of all deaths in 2005
(Cimadon, Geremia, & Pellanda, 2010). This is particularly important considering that a previous study conducted at a Brazilian
public university reported high levels of salty snack consumption
(data not shown).
