The coexistence between WiFi and LiFi is a newpromising research area. We have discussed theprimary characteristics of both technologiesand the possibility for them to coexist. We havedemonstrated that a close integration of bothtechnologies enables off-loading opportunitiesfor the WiFi network to free resources for moremobile users because stationary users will pref-erably be served by LiFi. In this way, LiFi andWiFi can efficiently collaborate. We have imple-mented several ways of channel aggregation forthe suggested coexistence, and demonstrated byproof-of-concept results, using state-of-the-artLiFi and WiFi frontends, that both technologiestogether can more than triple the throughputfor individual users and offer significant syner-gies, yielding a combined solution that can ade-quately address the need for enhanced indoorcoverage with the highest data rates needed inthe 5th generation of mobile networks (5G).Finally, we have outlined a roadmap for futureresearch opportunities toward the integration ofboth technologies.
