The experiment was conducted in accordance with French legislation on animal
experimentation and approved by the Regional Ethical Committee (Authorisation:
R-2012-NLF-02).
Piétrain × (Landrace × Large White) growing pigs (n = 37), consisting of entire males
and females, were recruited into the study in two successive replicates. In each replicate, 77-day-old pigs (approximately 35 kg bodyweight) were assigned, on the basis
of weight and sex, to one of two Ta conditions: thermo-neutral (TN, 24 °C) or high
temperature (HT, 30 °C). The first replicate involved eight pigs at TN (four males and
four females) and eight pigs at HT (three males and five females). The second replicate involved 10 pigs at TN (five males and five females) and 11 pigs at HT (six males
and five females).
At the beginning of the experiment, all pigs were fitted with a jugular catheter
as previously described (Melchior et al., 2004). The pigs were subsequently allocated to one of the two experimental temperature-controlled rooms (TN or HT) (see
protocol in Appendix A: Supplementary material). In each room, pigs were housed
in individual metal-slatted pens (TN: 0.85 × 1.30 m; HT: 0.70 × 2.30 m). The animals
had free access to water and received a cereal and soybean meal-based diet (10 MJ
of NE/kg, 165 g of CP/kg and 8.4 g of digestible Lys/kg), formulated to meet their nutritional requirements. The photoperiod was fixed to 12 h of artificial light (08:00–
20:00 h) and 12 h of darkness.
