When the mechanical brakes are applied, a current is also applied to the electromagnet and the braking effects of the
mechanical and magnetic brakes are added together. We note, however, that the braking effect assumes a velocity v. For this
reason, electromagnetic brakes cannot be used to completely stop a vehicle, only to slow it down. The magnetic brake is
therefore more appropriately called a magnetic retarder or damper. Electric brakes have many advantages. First, they brake
better at high speeds and are natural antilocking brakes, since locking of the wheels will immediately release the brakes.
