The daily volume of water required by hospitals to perform
their activities varies according to some factors, such as bed
numbers, general services offered within the structure (e.g.,
kitchen and laundry), accessibility to water, climate, cultural,
and geographical factors, among others. Accordingly, the volume
of effluent generated by hospitals is quite variable and it is
in the range of 200–1200 L bed−1 day−1 (Verlicchi et al. 2010).
