3. Should instructors be volunteer or paid? The majority of instructors in institutional
programs are paid. As a rule, having an instructor on the payroll seems to result in
better administrative relationships in organized classes. The director feels freer to
make demands on paid instructors for the good of the program. There are some
instances, however, in which volunteer instructors have made outstanding contribution in institutional programs. It sometimes happens that very prominent people, who
could not possibly be motivated by economic considerations, can be persuaded to
instruct a course as a community service. It would be a mistake, of course, to have a
hard-and-fast rule that would eliminate such people. Volunteer instructors are found
frequently in church, civic organizations, and club programs, are usually closely identified with the sponsoring organization, and are highly motivated by a sense of loyalty
to their group.
