News selection involves, firstly, deciding what is news and what is not, then, how to present a new item so that it can be understood by a very diverse audience.
“It is hard to imagine broadcast journalists anywhere seeking news which dealt with small events, the long-time, dull, distant, visually boring, unimportant people, and so on. Yet many of these labels describe events and processes which may well have significance for news audiences, but which are not news. The application of news values is part of the process by which this labelling occurs”.
