Pediatric neurologists have long known that the “normal” newborn
infant is alert, has alterations in levels of consciousness with sleepwake
cycles, and is vigorous with symmetric movement of all limbs.
The Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale attempts to quantitate
the normal behavioral and interactional ability of the newborn. The
scale recognizes that the baby’s state of consciousness is the most
important element in the behavioral and, I should add, neurological
examination. As such, the book is a useful reference for the psychologist,
pediatrician, and neurologist, potentially proving helpful both
clinically and in the design of prospective investigations regarding the
assessment and outcome of the newborn infant.
