The extractionofTPwasaccordingto Vallverdu-Queraltetal.
(2012). FCMweretreatedinadarkroomwitharedsafetylightto
avoidoxidationofthepolyphenols.Amountsof25gFCMwere
weighedandmixedwith80%ethanolin4mlMilli-Q water;the
mixture wasultrasonictreatedfor5minandcentrifuged(4000g)
at 4 1C for15min.Thesupernatantwastransferredintoa flask and
extractedthreetimes,thencombinedandevaporatedunder
nitrogen flow.Finally,theresiduesweremixedwith2mlMilli-Q
watercontaining0.1%formicacid,and filteredwitha0.45 μm
microporousmembrane(Sangon,Shanghai,China)andconcen-
tratedtodrynessunderreducedpressureinarotaryevaporatorin
order toyielddriedcrudeextracts.
The TPwasdeterminedusingamodification oftheFolin–
Ciocalteu method(Delgado-Torreetal.,2012) withminormod-
ifications. Amountsof0.5mlFCMorDCM(1mg/ml)weremade
up to10mlwithdistilledwater,mixedwith1mlFolin–Ciocalteu
reagentandthen3mlNa2CO3 (20%, w/v)wereaddedtothe
mixture,andheatedat50 1C for5min,thenkepttoreactatroom
temperatureindarknessfor30min.Theabsorbancewasmea-
suredat765nm.Theresultsareexpressedasmilligramofgallic
acid pergramofextract(mg GAE/gextract).
