Once features of interest were identified in high-resolution
profiles, we deployed a Sea-Bird Electronics SBE-32SC sub-
compact carousel rosette, fitted with 10 short (
30 cm in height),
1 l bottles (Ocean Test Equipment) designed to maximize the
vertical resolution of our samples. This sampling package also
included a Sea-Bird SBE-25 CTD and a WET Labs WETstar
chlorophyll fluorometer. Buoyancy of the sampling package was
adjusted to be slightly negative, and during sample collection was
allowed to descend slowly through the water column, decoupled
from ship motion as much as possible. Bottles were triggered
manually at features of interest based on real time chlorophyll
fluorescence and CTD data. Our general approach was to collect
multiple samples above, within and below layers seen in high-
resolution profiles, plus a surface bucket sample
