Over the next three and a half years McQueen designed two haute couture and two ready-to-wear collections annually for Givenchy. Watching his staff backstage, often overwhelmed by the emotional force of his presentations, McQueen said that he was not quite sure what all the fuss was about (Bolton 22). Only one show ever made him cry-No.13 (spring/summer 1999), during which models revolved on turntables like music-box dolls, clad in skirts made of balsa wood and dresses entirely embroidered with crystals (ibid 22). The finale featured former ballerina Shalom Harlow dancing while her white gown was spray-painted yellow and black by robots shipped in from an Italian car factory (ibid 22). Amid the spectacle it could have been easy to miss Paralympics champion Aimee Mullins, who as an infant had lost her legs from the knees down, wearing hand-carved wooden prostheses designed for her by McQueen (ibid 22).
