2.1. Overview of design
This research employs a matched caseecontrol design to
examine the characteristics of crustacean (crabs and lobsters)
species that make them vulnerable to IUU fishing. Different sources
were used and expert advice was sought to compile a comprehensive
list of these species. Using the standard species classification
system, a total of ten internationally caught IUU crustaceans
were each individually matched with controls. Several species, for
which more controls could be found, were matched with two
controls. The two groups of species were compared on CRAAVED
elements to identify the characteristics of crabs and lobsters that
made them vulnerable to IUU fishing.
