13. Results achieved
The project has contributed to the protection of the Mona a Monkeys that at some point in the history of the sanctuary were being killed due to the infiltration of Christian beliefs that played down on traditional beliefs and practices of the present state of the surrounding forest after forestation is of a better quality than before. Besides, the project has contributed to community development ( renovation of school, streetlight, poultry farm, scholarship for school children, etc.). The project has also provided employment to a number of community members ( tour guides, shop keeps, food sellers, sale of souvenirs, among others.) . The project receiving 908 paying visitors for the first half of 2002 and has generated a total revenue of
€ 16,949,000 ( approx. USD 2,100 ) within the same period. In general the community now has a better understanding and appreciation of the concepts of ecotourism development and the benefits that could be gained, thus generating much enthusiasm from the community to develop the site further.
14. Lessons learned
The project is still in its infant stage and so is yet to learn from its mistakes. However, over these few years, improvement have been made in streamlining accounting procedures for all tourism revenue so as to ensure a better management of proceeds. This has been achieved thought technical assistance from the United States peace corps volunteer resident in the village.
15. Monitoring activities
The project, together with 14 others, are being managed by community tourism management teams and teams report quarterly to the overall project steering committee that has oversight responsibility for work programming and monitoring at the these sites.
