Why is waste a problem?
Landfill
In Dorset we produce over 220,000 tonnes of household waste every year. That is about half a tonne, or half a car of household waste per person - the annual increase alone would cover a football pitch 3 feet deep.
Waste can cause local pollution and contribute to global warming - we need to look at ways to minimise harm to the environment.
Collecting, treating and disposing of Dorset's waste currently costs £10 million per year. That is £60 for every household - this cost will continue to rise due to the increasing amount of waste and tighter environmental controls
