However, while such results are strictly applicable to the examined case only, they have a more general validity. As a concluding remark, this analysis showed two categories of problems in the analysed firm. At first, the chosen carrier was not the optimal one in 55 per cent of shipments because the best carrier was often actually unknown given the large number of shipping zones to be considered. Moreover, the analysis showed an excessive use of LTL shipments which ultimately penalized the overall logistic performances. The main cause was the presence of marginal customers requiring small quantities of goods and/or the high number of customers in geographically/commercially marginal areas. In this cases, the application of the proposed optimisation system enabled to solve both problems.
