Since 2000, there have been reports of at least 25 incidents involving ethanol and its blends at fixed facilities and in transportation. On June 17, 2009, 18 cars of a Canadian National Railway train containing denatured ethanol derailed and 14 of them caught fire in Cherry Valley, Illinois, near Rockford. Of the train with 114 cars, 74 contained denatured ethanol. A civilian setting in their vehicle at the railroad crossing was fatally burned by the fire that engulfed her vehicle. Six others were also injured and taken to area hospitals. Approximately 600 homes in the area of the derailment were evacuated. Firefighters from 26 local departments responded to the fire that was allowed to burn itself out over several days.
