Boys are more interested in geography than girls, and/or they have a greater natural aptitude for geography than girls. At the high school level, boys have scored an average of almost 7 points higher on the Reading SAT test over the last 40 years, and almost 40 points higher on the Math SAT from 1972-2012. Given their higher scores on standardized tests for both reading and math, perhaps boys have greater natural abilities for geography. At the college level, boys outnumber girls for students earning degrees in geography by almost two-to-one, demonstrating a clear gender imbalance in interest (and possibly in ability) for majoring in geography.
