To assure seed quality, papaya farmers must take into account the sexual reproductive type and the genetic variability of the variety. Lines heterozygous for many traits will produce considerable trait diversity in the progeny. Dioecious varieties are open-pollinated and much phenotypic variability can arise in the seeds of fruit-bearing trees. The dioecious varieties are likely to be heterozygous for quality traits and to maintain the trait for generations, producer should strictly control pollination using standard breeding technique (Watson 1977).
