Four laboratory mice were infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei (STIB 920), Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (Etat 1.2 R variant), Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (LiTat 1.3) and Trypanosoma brucei evansi (STIB805) by intraperitoneal inoculation of 105 bloodstream stages (trypomastigotes), and the course of infection was controlled by searching for the flagellates in blood smears obtained as a drop from the tail.
