found that the total area of a viewdepicting vegetationwas a physical
variable that had an impact on people’s preferences toward
residential street scenes. Schroeder (1988) also noticed a strong
negative relationship between attractiveness and the amount of
development and bare soil to a ground-level observer on a hillside.
Many other studies on urban landscape assessment in the 1970s
and 1980s also concluded that having a view of vegetation resulted
in a higher preference for the urban landscape (Smardon, 1988).
Aoki (2006) summarized research on visual greenery conducted in
Japan since 1974. In those studies, different amounts of greenery in
views preferred by people were suggested for streets and residential
landscapes. For example, Aoki (1991) suggested most people
have a favorable impression of a street landscape if more than 30%
of the view includes greenery.
