Trade bananas, a product which could not generally be grown in the core, and was relatively non-perishable, was most important. The fruit was produced in parts of Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and some parts of Africa, shipped to Europe and subsequently to the USA. This system was almost fully extractive and based around plantation agriculture, leading to local enclaves where backward and forward linkages into the wider economy were limited.
