EPS packaging wastes are generally characterized by a low
recycling rate. While in theory EPS is reported to be recyclable, in
practice, due to cost-effectiveness, the recycling rate is negligible
(Davis and Song, 2006). A biodegradable and compostable packaging
system such as the prototype developed within the REBIOFOAM project (i.e. the port-hole spacer) is potentially suitable
to be recycled via industrial composting, thus increasing diversion
from landfill.
