Phagocytosis in multicellular organism is a fundamental process of cell to capture and ingest foreign particle. Normally, all cells are capable of the phagocytosis including epithelial or endothelial cells. However, the group of cell called “phagocytes” (neutrophil, eosinophil, and macrophage) are specialized cells that can perform phagocytosis very efficiently. Phagocytosis is an important part of innate immunity by eliminating pathogens or foreign antigens that larger than 0.5 m. Binding with IgG or C3b (opsonin) can enhance the performance of phagocytes in the process called “opsonization”. Phagocytosis can be divided into several main steps: (i) microbial recognition, (ii) phagosome formation, and (iii) phagolysosome maturation.
