econdly, politics is a process, the function of which is to resolve conflicts which arise out of the diverse interests, views and characteristics of human beings. Politics, it has been said, will continue, because diversity is not going to stop. Some of the more obvious cleavages of interests are those between the rich and poor, black and white, employer and employee, and young and old. Commitments to differing ideologies or philosophies, such as Marxism or fascism, socialism or capitalism, often lead to conflict. Even personality differences between people, as we all know from experience, can lead to disagreement and provide a basis for politics.
