This disease represents a wide spectrum of diseases ranging from simple steatosis to nonalcoholic
steato hepatitis (NASH) to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis. Simple steatosis is considered relatively
benign and has the best prognosis, but NASH is aggressive which may lead to progressive liver
disease. Therefore, the transition from simple steatosis to NASH is a key issue in the NAFLD
field. Although the etiology of this disease has remained elusive, oxidative stress and excessive lipid
accumulation are two requisites for NAFLD progression.
