Lesson ADT 1
Task: Attend to an object or task.
Prerequisites: None
Concepts:A foundation to learning is the ability to attend to a task. Teachthis aspect differs from "eye contact" (see COG 1) in that what is being measured is perceived awareness of activities taking place and responsiveness to a specific interaction or object. Unlike most other lessons in this inventory, it is a difficult response to perform. Therefore, the teaching action used in this sample lesson is to provide multiple forms of stimulation (tactile, auditory, visual, and kinesthetic) and toprovide reinforcing feedback to the student. The reinforcing feedback selected will depend upon the specific person being trained, but it could take the form of pleasant verbal interaction, a desired food, or pleasant tactile feedback.
Behavioral Objective: When presented with an object or physical interaction, the student will demonstrate responsiveness as measured by physically attending (focusing on a task or item) for a 3-minute period over five trials.
Materials: Brightly colored objects (preferably red and black), desired foods, pleasant (soft) music, items that vibrate, and a mild perfume.
Task Analysis:
1. Through observation or discussion with the primary caregiver, determinewhat activities or items appear to be desired by the student.
2. Present the items listed in the materials section in an effort to stimulate allthe senses.
3. If any form of response such as redirection of body position, a smile, verbalizations, or reaching for an object occurs, immediately reinforce with the items or actions determined in
Step 1
4. Continue Steps 1 through 3 and calculate the time spent by the student in attending to the task. Continue until five separate sessions have occurred with attending being perceived for more than 3 minutes.
