Outcome-driven research works its way backwards, looking at observed
outcomes and assigning prior causally significant events. This approach is most
common in longitudinal research, but it generates some broader issues. First, it leads to
the selection of the dependent variables, a well-known source of bias, and, second, it may
take all organizations into account regardless of whether or not they have experienced
the event.
