Indeed, Astrand’s analysis of lifestyles of humans since we first appeared on Earth some four million years ago led him to conclude ‘during more than 99 per cent of our existence we were hunters and food gatherers. Now we are exposed to an enormous experiment without control groups’ (Astrand 1994: 101)
