inter-terminal
transportation (Evers, 1994). The concept
of a City Distribution Centre is also based
on these developments. Jol (1993) describes different
implementations of this concept. A common
element in most alternatives considered is
the fact that physical delivery in a city centre is
achieved by using standard containers in combination
with automated transport tracks and/or
electric powered delivery vans. Other applications
of developments in telematics and in physical
transport can, for instance, be found in defence
applications. As part of the logistic support
system, a palletized load system has been developed.
These systems consist of standardized containers
and transport vehicles. Containerization,
in conjunction with inter-modal shipping, may be
the key to successfully re-supplying the troops in
modern armies (Moriarty and Turco, 1993).
