Both Mencius (c.385-c.312 BCE) and Xunzi (c.310-c.219 BCE) also promoted these principles as followers of the Confucian school.
Mencius argued that human nature was basically good, but that it could go bad if people are led astray from their naturally good inclinations.
Xunzi took the opposite view. He said that human nature was inherently bad and that one must therefore cultivate oneself to build good character.
